If you have had your own dental molds or Models made previously by a dentist, then you may be able to get a replacement retainer made for much less than going through your dentist again. Many companies are not willing to make a replacement retainer from existing models and will require you to use their own kit or come in to have a mold made by them. At SportingSmiles, we can use your existing molds, but there are some stipulations on using outside dental molds.
SportingSmiles accepts molds from new customers who have 3D Printed, Plaster or Stone Molds. We will accept 3D printed, plaster or stone molds if you have them and opt not to choose our impression kit but a $35 surcharge will be added to the order. When we receive your molds, they will automatically be scanned into our 3D system and saved on file for life. This means you’ll be able to reorder from SportingSmiles whenever you’d like.Â
Own models are fragile and frail, there’s a high chance that that may become damaged in the process of working with them so to avoid that we have our lab scan them in. We will work off the scanned molds to to avoid cracking, breaking, or damaging the molds and ship them back to you once the process of scanning them in is complete.Â
If there is ever a warranty issue, we will then be able to use the scanned molds we have on file for you instead of needing you own molds again.Â

Disadvantages of Using Your Own Molds
No Warranty
We can’t warranty retainers made using outside molds because we don’t know how old they are. The new retainers will be made perfectly, but your teeth may have shifted since the impression was taken. Therefore, the mold may result in a retainer that does not fit as well as it should. If the mold is recent though, you should be fine.
Damaged Impression
There is a chance that your teeth mold could be damaged when the new retainer is being made. We will try our best for this not to happen, but there is always a chance. Many times your dental impressions can be 3d scanned and a duplicate can be made, but this isn’t always possible. Stone or plaster dental impressions can dry out over time and there are different qualities in dental stone. There is also a chance that they may get damaged in the mail. Unfortunately, we cannot accept any responsibility for damaged models sent to us. Make sure to package them securely in bubble wrap when shipping.
Same Cost
There is no discount on using your existing impression. We are happy to use your mold or model, but in the interest of providing people with the best possible quality, we do not charge any extra to have a fresh impression made. There is often more work involved in correcting your current impression than there is in making a new one, so we recommend that you take a fresh impression if possible.Â

a reason why someone woyld need to use an old mold is that theyve lost their retainers, teeth has shifted a little bit and woyldnt want a retainer with their newly shifted impressions and rather have their original, more perfect impressions.
